Optimizing Network Health Monitoring

Matellio helped SeaChange - a publicly-traded US company offering video distribution and streaming services - to proactively monitor asset health and performance at a network operating center, resulting in cost avoidance and staff resource optimization.

01

The Challenge

publicly-traded US company focused on video distribution and streaming services for cable TV broadcast platformssought to reduce complexity, risk and cost of managing customer network health and performance (network operating center, or NOC).

The NOC relied on data managed within their internal systems as well as customers’ public cloud and on-premise environments.

02

The Solution

Matellio designed a single, web-based solution to centralize Network Operating Center monitoring and provide summary and detailed network performance and log data to Tier 1 – 3 support personnel.

Matellio configured an open-source tool (Prometheus) to collect data from remote services hosted by each customer environment and published this data via a dedicated virtual private cloud connection to the monitoring tool.

This approach ensured secure, authorized access to data in a consistent manner and minimized SW licensing cost.

03

The Outcome

Proactive monitoring services detected and alerted operations staff of risks or early-stage issues to avoid or minimize business impacts. For example, automated notifications prevented network outages, which can cause a downtime of 48 hours and result in steep equipment repair and replacement costs,  financial penalties from customer Service Level Agreements, customer churn, and overall reputational harm.

In addition, the client was able to routinely monitor network health more efficiently. The average staff time required to perform a health check per customer (32 services) was reduced from 60 minutes to 2 minutes.
